Marco has a real passion for the concept of “research that matters”, research that leads to truly new and usable knowledge. He has dedicated the last few years of his life (and he estimates many years to come as well) to researching this concept, hoping one day to be able and proudly look back at his work certain he is leaving a valuable legacy behind. In his exciting quest, he was extremely lucky to have some of the most insightful conversations on the subject with many Nobel Laureates as well as so called Management Gurus, among which Mintzberg, Kaplan, Kotler, Kotter, etc. His upcoming book “Doing research that matters: shaping the future of management” reflects on these conversations.

Beside this personal obsession, Marco has over 10-year experience working as project manager, consultant and researcher in several multi-million dollar projects worldwide, improving and innovating business strategies and operations. At the end of 2007, aiming to build the gap between research and practice, he founded Carisma RCT, an innovative research-led knowledge organisation offering Research, Consulting and Training services for strategic and operational excellence, business internationalisation and strategic sourcing. Now its Chairman and CEO, Marco has grown Carisma into an international practice with clients in UK, USA, Europe, Africa and Asia.

In 2010/11, Marco led Carisma to join (as the supply chain, continuous improvement & project management partner) ZE1 Global, a £20 Million Joint Venture Company offering Engineering and Fabrication services to the Energy Industry. Appointed CEO by the Board of Directors, Marco is now tasked with managing ZE1 Global, designing a suitable supply chain framework and growing the business to a targeted £100 Million in the next 5 years.

In addition to his various roles in Industry, fuelled by his passion for knowledge, innovation and discovery, Marco keeps himself occupied with a range of academic activities and positions as well. Among others, he is editor-in-chief of Strategic Outsourcing, an International Journal (SOIJ), published by Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., and winner of Emerald’s Award for Excellence – Best New Journal Launch (in the period between 2008 and 2011). SOIJ has generated over 40,000 article downloads to date and is currently subscribed by over 6000 Institutions worldwide. Over the years, Marco has also been accepting a number of contract positions at universities worldwide as sessional lecturer, visiting professor, visiting researcher, subject teacher and MBA project supervisor. Universities he has worked for/with include Aston, Liverpool, Strathclyde (in the UK), Vietnam’s National Economics University (Hanoi, Vietnam), Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (Dalian, China); Boise State University (USA) and many others.

Before moving to industry to set-up Carisma, he was founding manager of the Centre for Business Process Outsourcing, a £1 Million research centre co-funded by the University of Strathclyde, Highland and Island Enterprise, EPSRC and Vertex. Before arriving in Scotland, he was a research scientist in the manufacturing logistics group at SINTEF Industrial Management in Norway, the biggest research foundation in Scandinavia.

Last, Marco has also worked as a consultant and advisor to several Government and public sector organisations, industry associations and Universities worldwide. His work is published in various international journals, books, trade magazines and newspapers (amongst others, The Times).
